The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
There are so many noise cancelling headphones available in the market, so which one should you get? Are they really worth the money?
To be honest, there really are only a few of these headphones you should be looking at, if you’re talking about noise cancelling abiity as well as sound quality. Sure, you can find models that range from less than $50 to those close to $1000.
But I’ve found that the low range ones really don’t cancel noise that well. For these, any sound cancelling is merely by a token amount.
Here are the top few that I’ve found that sound good and block out external noise well. No more cheap ones that don’t work.
This is a popular pair of headphones with powerful noise cancelling capability, and excellent sound quality.
This is a next-generation pair of offering from Bose, having produced successful noise cancelling headphones in the past.
Unlike its predecessor (which uses a proprietary rechargeable battery), the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 now uses standard AAA batteries, which can last up to 35 hours. Thuis means that if you’re traveling, and the battery goes flat, you can easily get a replacement from any store that sells AAA batteries. Or you can use your own AAA rechargeable batteries.
The sound quality is excellent, bringing fullness from the low sound range to the highs. Bass is not weak, but neither is it overpowering. It’s satisfying, modestly-speaking.
Put it on, turn on the power and the noise cancelling kicks in. There’s no hum or weird sounds that some alternatives have when noise cancelling is active. External sounds become very muted. Of those that I’ve tested, I’d say that the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 has the best noise cancelling out there.
#2: The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B
This is the closest competitor to the Bose headphones.
The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B are a quality pair of headphones with good noise cancellation. Although the sound quality and noise cancelling are not as good as the Bose Quiet Comfort 15, the ATH-ANC7B are able to stand on its own because it’s significantly cheaper than the Bose.
For its price range, the ATH-ANC7B is excellent value for money for the kind of sound quality you are getting. In addition, its noise cancelling is good. When turned on, outside noises fade out, and when music is being played, you’ll be able to enjoy the music without any intruding sounds.
Highly recommended if the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 is out of your budget.

#3: The Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones
The Sony MDR-NC500D are a pair of pretty solid headphones. If you like bass, you’ll like this one.
In its own right, the MDR-NC500D is comfortable and has good sound quality. In my opinion, it also looks nice and is something which I will bring out for my daily commute.
The noise reduction is superb; you’ll likely be pleased with this one. Turned it on at a noisy shopping mall once. There were lots of people talking loudly, and the place was such that it had lots of echoes in it. When the Sony MDR-NC50 was turned on, it cut down all the talking by around 80%. The remaining 20% was pretty much muted. More importantly, I couldn’t hear any of the background noisy echoes anymore.
Didn’t even need to blast the volume up.
All in all, if you don’t like the looks of the Bose (I like the Bose’s looks BTW), consider this one.
#4: The JVC HANC250 High-Grade Noise-Cancelling Headphones
The JVC HANC250 are a bit economical compared to the rest of them here. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad.
On the contrary, I find that it gives excellent value for its price. If you’re looking for a decent pair of noise cancelling headphones without burning a hole in your pocket, you’ll want to take a look at this pair.
They are lightweight, comfy and has pretty nice sound quality. The build quality is also top-notch, certainly not something you’d associate with this price range.
The sound… what can I say. It’s balanced, without any overpowering bass or strange highs. It’s good for listening to most genres. The battery life is also good as well.
I know of people who swear by it; they won’t buy any headphones other than these, simply because of the good balanced sound, and more importantly, the good, balanced price.

#5: Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones
The Sennheiser PXC 450 is another popular pair of headphones. Some people prefer it over the previous generation Bose (Quiet Comfort 2, Quiet Comfort 3) because of its sound signature.
The Sennheiser PXC 450 are a little big, which means some folks won’t want to bring it out when they commute. But the size has an advantage. They provide comfortable passive noise cancellation. When combines with its active noise cancelling, there’s excellent cutting off of background sounds.
The sound quality is excellent as well, but the bass isn’t as strong as the Bose. This is not to say that the bass is weak, however. It’s still very good.
The Sennheiser brand is renowned for making great headphones, so you can’t go wrong here. If you’re choosing between the Bose and this, IMHO it’s down to differences in asthetics (size) and bass.
